Nishi-arai Taishi Sōjiji is formally known as Gochisanzen Henjō-in Sōjiji, a temple of the Toyosanzan branch of Shingon Buddhism. It is affectionately known as "Nishi-arai no Taishi-sama" and is one of the three great Taishi temples of the Kantō region. It is said to have been founded when Kōbō Daishi Kūkai traveled through the Kantō region, and boasts a history of over a thousand years as a temple with proven efficacy in purifying misfortune. It is particularly famous for prayers of purification from misfortune, and each year many visitors come to seek purification. The precincts contain the main hall and many other structures, with various services and events held throughout the seasons. Additionally, there is a legend that Kōbō Daishi cleansed his hands in the pond within the grounds, and the "blessed water" is still sought by many believers.
