History

Byakko

Yui Wakamiya (Moto-Tsurugaoka Hachimangu), also known as Moto-Hachiman (the Original Hachiman), stands in Zaimokuza, Kamakura. It was founded in 1063 (Kohei 6) when Minamoto no Yoriyoshi enshrined a divided spirit from the Iwashimizu Hachimangu. This is the original site of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu; when Minamoto no Yoritomo entered Kamakura, he relocated the shrine to its present prominent location. The shrine continues to be administered by Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, and the annual festival is held on April 2nd. It remains a quietly dignified remnant of the ancient Kamakura capital.
