Kozan-ji Temple in Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture, belongs to the Omuro branch of Shingon Buddhism. With the mountain name Shonanmenzan and the principal image of Dainichi Nyorai (Mahavairocana), this temple is rooted in a spiritually charged land where multiple routes of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage paths intersect. For centuries it has served as a place of solace for those undertaking the Kumano pilgrimage. Under the protection of Dainichi Nyorai, the cosmic buddha of Shingon teaching, this ancient temple continues to receive the prayers of pilgrims.
