Taisan-ji is the fifty-second temple on the Shikoku Eighty-Eight Temple Pilgrimage and is an ancient and venerable temple located in the mountainous areas of Matsuyama City. According to tradition, it was founded by imperial decree of Emperor Yomei and is known as one of the most prestigious ancient temples among the Shikoku sacred sites. Possessing a national treasure main hall and many important cultural properties, it is a veritable treasure house of Buddhist architecture. In the serene mountain setting where Kobo Daishi is said to have practiced, this temple stands as one of Shikoku's most renowned temples, continuously visited by people seeking spiritual purification and enlightenment.
