History

Byakko

Isono Jinja serves as the tutelary shrine of Saijo City, and is an ancient shrine of distinguished lineage continuing from antiquity. It is said to have been founded during the reign of Emperor Jinmu, and is renowned for its deep connection with the faith surrounding Mount Ishizuchi. As the central focus of the Saijo Festival held every October, it is nationally famous for its lavish and gorgeous festival floats and drum carts (danjiri). During the festival, over eighty drum carts converge at the shrine grounds, and this magnificent spectacle stirs the hearts of all who behold it. It continues to receive profound devotion as a spiritual support for the local community and as a cultural symbol of Saijo. Many people also perform prayers for safe passage before ascending Mount Ishizuchi.
