History

Byakko

Sumadera, standing in the Suma district of Kobe, is an ancient Shingon Buddhist temple with approximately 1,100 years of history. It is known for its connections to the Genpei War, particularly famous for the story of Taira no Atsumori and Kumagae Naozane. Within its grounds stands the grave mound of Atsumori. As the site of the "Battle of Ichinotani," it is a sacred place where the spirits of many warriors rest. Cherished as a cherry blossom viewing spot, the grounds bloom beautifully in spring. As a temple rich in historical romance, it continues to be visited by many worshippers.
