History

Byakko

Jonan Jinja is a prestigious shrine founded during the relocation of the imperial capital to Heian to pray for the nation's peace and stability. Particularly famous as the deity of ward-off, it attracts many visitors at life's turning points such as moving, travel, and career changes. Situated on the historically significant grounds where the palaces of Emperor Shirakawa and Emperor Toba once stood, it is also a place where court culture flourished. The 'Rakusuien' garden within the grounds, inspired by the Tale of Genji, is beloved, and one can enjoy beautiful flowers throughout the seasons. The camellia season in particular is magnificent, offering an elegant atmosphere as if transported back to the court period.
