History

Byakko

Chishakuin stands as the principal temple of the Chisan branch of Shingon Buddhism, a magnificent complex gracing Kyoto's eastern mountains. Founded by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in the fourteenth year of Tensho, the temple preserves remarkable fusuma paintings by Hasegawa Tohaku of extraordinary subtlety. As the sacred mausoleum of Kobo Daishi, it serves as the spiritual center of Kobo Daishi devotion. Along the avenue of Higashioji and Shichijo, the ancient Buddhist teachings continue to shine brilliantly, illuminating the path for all who seek wisdom and protection.
