History

Byakko

A Tendai Buddhist temple in Chofu, Tokyo, founded by the monk Manku Shonin in 730 CE (or 750 CE according to another account). The founding monk is also known for establishing Jindaiji Temple nearby, and this site is said to be his birthplace. Originally of the Hosso sect, it converted to Tendai during the Heian period. In 1908, the head priest Nakanishi Gogen held a memorial ceremony for martyrs of the Freedom and Popular Rights Movement, attended by Itagaki Taisuke, who planted the famous "Pine of Liberty" still standing in the precincts.
