Kantsoji Temple, formally known as Honmyozan Kantsoji, is a Jodo Buddhist temple located in Kikuicho, Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo. According to tradition, it was founded in 1606 (Keicho 11) by the monk Kanyo Zonje, a disciple of Zonno, the 15th head priest of Zojoji Temple in Edo. Originally built in Shimomeduro, Ebara District, Musashi Province, the temple relocated several times due to Edo Castle expansion, finally settling at its current site in Kikuicho in 1728 (Kyoho 13). The principal image is a seated Amitabha Buddha statue believed to date from the early Edo period. The temple served as a branch temple of Zojoji, the family temple of the Tokugawa shoguns, and gathered many devotees.
