History

Byakko

Yatadera was originally founded in the early Heian period as a branch temple of Yatadera in Yamato Province, at the Gojo Bomon district of Kyoto. After relocating several times, it settled at its current site on Teramachi Street in Nakagyo Ward in 1579. The principal image is Jizo Bosatsu, popularly known as "Yata Jizo." The temple bell is called the "Okuri-gane" (sending bell), counterpart to Rokudo Chinno-ji's "Mukai-gane" (welcoming bell) — it is rung to guide the souls of the deceased safely to the afterlife. Two scrolls of painted Yata Jizo origin stories are designated national Important Cultural Properties.
