History

Byakko

Hokke-ji, a nunnery founded through the devotion of Empress Komyo, wife of Emperor Shomu, enshrines the Eleven-faced Avalokiteshvara. For over a thousand years, women have found solace in this sanctuary, seeking blessings for fertility, protection, and spiritual awakening. Even when women were excluded from most temples, this sacred hall remained open to receive the prayers of all women.
