History

Byakko

Kongosanmaiin is one of the most prestigious temples on Koya, founded by Hojo Masako to honor the memory of Minamoto no Yoritomo—a temple full of historical romance. With deep connections to the Kamakura Shogunate, it has been a site of samurai faith. The grounds contain a National Treasure pagoda that is the oldest building on Koya. Memorial towers for Yoritomo and his son Sanetomo also stand here, evoking the transience of samurai warriors in a solemn atmosphere. This sacred place possesses a unique spirituality formed by the fusion of the profound teachings of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism and samurai culture.
