History

Byakko

Kouenji Tenson Shrine, enshrining Amaterasu-Omikami, has been the guardian deity of Kouenji in Suginami Ward since the village of Kouenji was first settled. According to tradition, the deity was enshrined here by invitation from Ise Jingu. In the Edo period, Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu reportedly visited during a falconry outing and admired wild chrysanthemums offered by the head priest, earning the shrine the nickname Nogiku-no-Miya (Shrine of Wild Chrysanthemums). The annual festival on September 16th continues to this day as a cherished local tradition.
