History

Byakko

Fuyuki Bentendo, a small hall enshrining Benzaiten in Fukagawa, Tokyo, was founded in 1654 when lumber merchant Fuyukiya (Ueda Naotsugi) enshrined a divided spirit from Chikubushima Island on Lake Biwa as his household deity. The place name 'Fuyuki' itself derives from his merchant name. The hall moved to its current location in 1705 and opened to the general public in 1870. Since then, it has been cherished as the Benzaiten of the Fukagawa Shichifukujin pilgrimage, drawing visitors seeking blessings for arts, learning, and prosperity.
