History

Byakko

Ogura Shrine in Ogi, Otsu City, is an ancient shrine listed in the Engishiki. According to tradition, Prince Koretaka, son of Emperor Montoku, enshrined Izanami no Mikoto here in 858. The following year Minamoto no Toru transferred the water deity Kuraokami no Kami to this site as the principal deity. Listed as a prefectural shrine (kensha) in the modern era, the shrine is famed for its May festival 'Ogi Dorotamatsuri,' featuring yabusame horseback archery and a procession of five portable shrines through the paddy fields.
