ten hourin tera

Tenpourin-ji is the head temple of the Shingon Daigo sect and the principal training ground of Kazuraki Shugendo, situated on Mount Takama in Gose City, Nara. According to tradition, it was founded by En no Gyoja, the founder of Shugendo, who trained here and established a place to spread Buddhist teachings. The principal image is Fudo Myoo, and the temple is affectionately known locally as the Takama no Ofudo-san. During the Edo period it received the patronage of the Kishu Tokugawa clan.
