History

Byakko

Inarimori Inari Jinja is a shrine in Setagaya, Tokyo. While the founding date is unknown, a koshin-to stone monument bearing an inscription from the Enpo era (1673-1681) suggests the shrine already existed at that time. It was formerly known as "Sugakarisya" after the Sugakari estate, and before the war the area was densely wooded, called "Inarimori" (Inari Forest), which gave the shrine its current name. A legend holds that Shizuka Gozen once worshipped here. The shrine survived the Meiji-era shrine consolidation policy thanks to strong opposition from parishioners.
