Hirakawa Tenmangū is a venerable Tenjin shrine situated in Hirakawa-cho, Chiyoda Ward, and has served the important role of warding off calamities from the northeastern gate of Edo Castle. It was deeply revered by the Tokugawa house and flourished as a center of learning during the Edo period. The place name Hirakawa-cho derives from the area once being called Hirakawa in antiquity, and this Tenmangū enshrines Sugawara Michizane, the kami of learning. Even today, situated at the center of politics, it receives many worshippers including politicians, bureaucrats, and examination candidates who offer prayers for success in examinations and academic achievement. Though located in the heart of the city, it maintains a quiet and serene presence, helping visitors settle their minds and cultivate their determination to pursue learning.
