History

Byakko

Hikami Aneko Shrine stands on a hill called Hikami-yama in the Otaka district of Midori Ward, Nagoya, Aichi. It is an ichinomiya-class ancient shrine listed in the Engishiki and serves as an auxiliary shrine outside the precincts of the Grand Atsuta Shrine. This site is said to be the sacred ground where the Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi — one of the Three Imperial Treasures — was enshrined before the founding of Atsuta. The principal deity is Miyazu-hime-no-Mikoto, who shares deep ties with Yamato Takeru. According to shrine tradition, the spirit of Miyazu-hime was enshrined here in the reign of Emperor Chuai, and the shrine was relocated to its present site in 690 (Jito 4). In 1872 it was ranked as a village shrine, then in 1880 restored as an auxiliary shrine of Atsuta Jingu, its status to the present day.
