History

Byakko

Karatsu Jinja has long been cherished as the protective deity of Karatsu Castle town. Enshrining the Three Sumiyoshi Deities, it has gathered the faith of fishermen wishing for maritime safety and abundant catches. During the 'Karatsu Kunchi' festival held each November, the shrine becomes the center of a grand celebration where fourteen magnificent and elaborate floats are dedicated. This festival boasts a history of over 300 years and is registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. It is truly a place where the culture and traditions of castle town Karatsu are carried forward to the present day, and stands as the spiritual foundation of the region.
