History

Nakano Hikawa Jinja is the principal tutelary shrine of the former Nakano Village, located in Higashi-Nakano, Nakano Ward, Tokyo. Its origins trace to 1030 (Chogen 3), when Minamoto no Yorinobu enshrined a divided spirit of Omiya Hikawa Jinja, the ichinomiya of Musashi Province, while on campaign to suppress Taira no Tadatsune. In 1477 (Bunmei 9), Ota Dokan offered prayers for victory here before his battle against the Toshima clan, and rebuilt the shrine hall upon his return. The three principal deities enshrined are Susanoo no Mikoto, Kushiinada-hime no Mikoto, and Onamuchi no Mikoto. The shrine has long been revered for protection against calamity, matchmaking, and household safety, continuing to watch over the people of Nakano through the centuries.
