History

Byakko

Founded in 1021 CE when Kazusa no Suke Taira no Tadatsune enshrined Urata Myoken-do, this shrine at Kururi has served as a center of regional faith for over a millennium. Myoken is the deified North Star, revered as a guardian of direction and military fortune. In 1192, Minamoto no Yoritomo offered prayers for victory here upon landing at Katsuyama from Manazuru. Successive lords of the Kururi domain held the shrine in deep reverence. Sacred water still flows within the shrine grounds, drawing visitors to this day.
