History

Byakko

Arai Suwa Jinja has been cherished as the guardian shrine of Arai Station, an important post town on the Tokaido. It enshrines Suwa no Kami, who was transferred from Suwa Taisha in Shinano, and has watched over travelers and local people with the blessings of this martial kami. During the Edo period, the Arai Barrier was established, and this place, where many travelers passed, collected the faith of those praying for safe passage and business prosperity. Today, it remains treasured by the local community as the local tutelary kami.
