In the 13th year of Tenpyo (741) of the Nara period, when the Empress Shoumu ordered the establishment of provincial temples throughout the nation, this temple was founded in Suo Province. This ancient temple standing in Hofu boasts a long history exceeding a thousand years. During the Sengoku period, it received the patronage of the Mori clan, and during the Edo period, it flourished as the family temple of the Mori domain.
