History

Byakko

Iboni-masu-amaterasu Shrine, one of the three great shrines of Harima, is said to have been founded in 594 CE (the 2nd year of Empress Suiko) on the summit of Mt. Hinoyama. The enshrined deity is Amaterasu-kuniteru-hikohohonori-no-kami. The shrine name Ibo is considered the origin of the place name Ibo, deeply connected to rice cultivation. In the Heian period it was designated a Myojin-Taisha in the Engishiki, and later elevated to a prefectural shrine (kensha) in the Meiji era. The mountain is said to resemble a seated dragon, hence the local name Ryuza Shrine.
