History

Byakko

Shosen-ji is a historic Jodo sect temple in Senju, Adachi Ward, Tokyo. Founded in 1260 by the monk Shorensha Sen-a, it is affectionately known as Akamon-ji (Red Gate Temple) for its distinctive vermilion gate, which was a landmark for travelers along the Senju post town during the Edo period. The temple came under the protection of the shogunate after relocating to its current site and preserves important cultural assets including a wooden thousand-armed Kannon statue. Legend holds that the Shinsengumi stopped here during the turbulent final years of the Edo period.
