History

Byakko

Allow this fox to share the tale of Matsusaka Jinja, gracefully situated in Matsusaka, Ise Province. This venerable shrine has served as guardian deity of the castle grounds since Lord Gamo Ujisato established Matsusaka Castle. Originally existing as separate shrines—Matsusaka Tenmangu honoring Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning; Matsusaka Kasuga Jinja dedicated to Kasuga Okami; along with Shinmei-gu and Hachiman-gu—these sacred spaces eventually merged into the unified shrine we see today. With Sugawara no Michizane as the principal deity, countless students and young people visit seeking wisdom and academic success. This sacred ground truly embodies Matsusaka's living history, serving as a cornerstone where the community's prayers and hopes converge, indeed.
