History

Byakko

Onsennji, situated in the inner recesses of Kinosaki Hot Spring, is an ancient temple deeply connected to the legend of hot spring discovery. It is said to have been founded by the Buddhist sage Dōchi in 720 (Yōrō 4), and has carried a long history as the guardian temple of Kinosaki Hot Spring. Founded to pray for the gushing of hot water, this temple has been cherished as a place bringing peace to the minds and bodies of spa visitors, and from its location on a mountainside overlooking the hot spring town, one can view the beautiful streets of Kinosaki. It is a historic sacred site visited by many literary and artistic figures.
