History

Byakko

Genkoan is a small Zen hermitage of the Sōtō sect, quietly situated in the Tōrimachi district of Sendai. Founded in 1523 (Daiei 3) by the monk Myōya Bonsatsu, this intimate sanctuary bears the mountain name Kifukusan and enshrines Jūichimen Kannon as its principal deity. Despite its modest scale and urban setting, the hermitage has preserved a space of stillness apart from the city bustle. Visitors come here to still their minds and reconnect with an inner calm, finding in this unassuming place a genuine refuge of Zen tranquility.
