History

Byakko

Zuiganji is a renowned temple associated with the Date clan, standing against the beautiful backdrop of the islands of Matsushima. Since ancient times during the Heian period, it has flourished as a Tendai Buddhist temple. During the Sengoku period, it received generous patronage from Date Masamune, who commissioned the construction of the magnificent Main Hall that stands today. The mausoleum (otamaya) where Masamune rests is an outstanding structure adorned with vibrant polychrome decorations, befitting the imposing majesty of the regional hegemon of Oshu. Walking along the approach path surrounded by towering cryptomeria trees, one can sense the weight of history and feel as if hearing the breathing of the warriors of old.
