History

Byakko

Meigetsuin is a temple of the Rinzai sect Kenchoji School, originating as a sub-temple of Zenkoiji founded by Uesugi Norinori. It flourished as the family temple of the Kanto Region's military governors, the Uesugi clan, during the Muromachi period. Affectionately known as the 'Hydrangea Temple,' its grounds are adorned with beautiful hydrangeas in early summer, enchanting many visitors. The views of the four seasons seen through the round window are also among its notable attractions.
