History

Byakko

Nishinomiya Jinja is renowned throughout the nation as the head shrine of Ebisu. With Hiruko no Okami as its primary deity, it has long been deeply revered as the god of prosperous commerce. The shrine is famous for the "Toka Ebisu" festival held on January 10th each year, where the "Fukuo Otoko" (lucky man race) draws national attention as men sprint toward the main hall at the moment of opening. This sacred rite, beginning at the red gate, is a symbolic event expressing prayers for commercial prosperity throughout the year. The unique custom of affixing coins to a large tuna in the grounds is a sight unique to this shrine. It is a sacred place visited by worshippers from across the nation seeking the blessings of Ebisu.
