Anrakuji is an ancient Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple in Bessho Onsen, known as the oldest Zen temple in Shinshū. Particularly famous is the eight-cornered three-story pagoda that uniquely survives in Japan today, designated as a National Treasure. Built during the Kamakura period, this pagoda incorporates Song dynasty Chinese architectural styles in its rare design, and its graceful form has captivated many. It has long been cherished as a sacred site for spiritual training and purification of body and mind, visited alongside hot spring treatments at Bessho Onsen.
