History

Shogonnji, formally known as Shorinzan Shogonnji, is a temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect located in Nishiwaki, Hyogo Prefecture. It is said to have been founded by the legendary priest Hodo Sennin. The multi-storied pagoda with its cypress-bark roof is designated as a Hyogo Prefecture cultural property and stands as a testament to the temple's long history. The temple is also known for its connection to the warlord Kuroda Kanbei (Yoshitaka/Josui), whose memory permeates the grounds. In autumn, the brilliant red foliage draws many visitors to this mountain temple.
