History
Neriji is the head temple of the Shingon Buddhist sect established in the late Heian period by Kakuban. Once flourishing as a great temple with ten thousand warrior monks, it became renowned as the Neriji Forces during the Sengoku period. Though it lost many structures during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Kishu campaign, it was revived during the Edo period and continues to house numerous important cultural properties. In particular, the Daitou pagoda is designated as a National Treasure, and its beautiful form moves the hearts of all who visit.
