History

Byakko

Tsurutani Hachimangu, located in Tateyama, Chiba Prefecture, serves as the general shrine (sōsha) of Awa Province. Its origins trace to the early Heian period, when it was established near the provincial government headquarters. As Hachiman worship spread during the Kamakura period, the shrine was transformed from a general shrine into a Hachimangu and relocated to its present site in Tateyama. It received devoted patronage from the Satomi clan and the Tokugawa shogunate, who contributed shrine buildings and lands. The shrine was renamed Tsurutani Hachimangu during the 1976 main hall renovation. Its annual grand festival Yawatanmachi, with over a millennium of tradition, has been designated an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Chiba Prefecture.
