History

Byakko

Otakayama Jinja stands in Ogawara Town, Miyagi, along the Shiroishi River — known for its breathtaking cherry blossom vista called Hitome Senbonzakura. Designated a Shikinaisha Meijin Taisha in the Engishiki, the shrine enshrines Yamato Takeru no Mikoto and Tachibana no Toyohi no Mikoto. A kakiguchi bronze bell bearing the dated inscription Shoo 6 (1293) remains the oldest known artifact bearing the term kakiguchi in Japan. The shrine has long guarded the bountiful harvests and good fortune of this Tohoku gateway.
