History
Gakko Jinja in Hiraizumi is an ancient shrine that walked together with the prosperity of the Oshu Fujiwara clan. True to its name Gakko, it is a mystical shrine dedicated to the deity of the moon. It is said that this shrine was established as a spiritual support for the people living in this area during the time when the golden culture of Hiraizumi flourished. Even after the fall of the Fujiwara clan, this shrine has been carefully preserved by the local people and carries deep history in its silence. The grounds, illuminated by moonlight, are wrapped in a truly sacred atmosphere. A visit here allows one to feel the graceful culture of ancient Hiraizumi and the compassion of the moon deity.
