About
History
Ikushima Tarushima Jinja is an ancient shrine dedicated to Ikushima-no-kami and Tarushima-no-kami, deities of the land. As their names suggest, meaning "living island" and "sufficient island," they symbolize the vitality rooted in the earth. The shrine is also historically connected to Sengoku-era warlords, including Takeda Shingen and the father-and-son pair Sanada Masayuki and Sanada Yukimura, who visited to pray for victory in battle. The main hall floating on a pond within the shrine grounds is a rare architectural style, and its appearance of being enshrined upon an island is truly mystical. Since ancient times, it has been cherished by local people as a deity of descendant prosperity and abundant harvests.
