History

Genkoji is an ancient Jodo school temple in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, formally known as Nyotoba-san Dojuin Genkoji. The temple is celebrated for its grounds containing 1,200 peonies of 120 varieties, making it one of the most famous peony viewing sites in the region. During the peony season, gagaku court music performances are held, creating a harmonious blend of blossoms and ancient melodies. The temple is also associated with the monk Haryuu, who pioneered the mountain ascent route to Mount Yarigatake. The Mizuno clan mausoleum on the grounds has been designated a special historical site by Matsumoto City. With its convergence of natural beauty, history, and faith, Genkoji draws visitors throughout the year.
