History

Byakko

The Atago Jinja of Shizuoka City is enshrined at the summit of Atago Mountain and has long been cherished by the citizens as a shrine dedicated to the kami of fire prevention. It enshrines Homusubi no Kami, who was transferred from the Atago Jinja in Kyoto, and has been revered as a protective deity guarding people from fire disasters. This shrine stands in a scenic location overlooking Suruga Bay from the mountainside and has served as a guardian deity watching over the town of Shizuoka. During the Edo period, the town firefighters of Suruga held deep faith in this shrine, and even today, visitors never cease to come seeking protection from fire and family safety.
