History

Byakko

Hozumi Shrine stands on the summit of Mount Ryuso, an ancient site of Shugendo (mountain asceticism) practice in Aoi Ward, Shizuoka City. Formerly known as the Ryuso Daigongen, it enshrines Onamuchi-no-mikoto and Sukunahikona-no-mikoto. Though its founding date is unknown, it has long been revered as a sacred mountain site for ascetic practice and local faith. In 1870 (Meiji 3) it was renamed to its current form, and in 1875 (Meiji 8) it was designated as a gosa (village shrine). The shrine continues to welcome hikers and worshippers amid the rich natural surroundings of Mount Ryuso.
