History

Byakko

Situated in the mountain village of Iritani, Minamisanriku, this shrine enshrines Homutawake no Mikoto. Revered as a deity of martial valor, agriculture, and good matches, it has long served as a guardian of the community. The grounds feature a bronze octopus statue known as 'Octopus-kun,' welcoming visitors to the shrine. When the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake devastated coastal Minamisanriku, the inland Iritani district became a center for reconstruction. This shrine has continued to protect the bonds of the local community.
