History
Hongakuji, with the mountain name Seiryuzan, is a head temple (honzan) of the Nichiren school in Ikeda, Suruga Ward, Shizuoka. Its origins trace to 1288 when the monk Nichii established a small hermitage at Nakanogo in Iwabuchi. Moving to the Ikeda estate in 1308, the temple was formally founded the following year. The Honbutsudo (Main Buddha Hall), built in 1321, survived the Meiji-era fire that destroyed most structures and still stands today. The temple holds the Prefecturally Designated Cultural Property 'Nichiren Sosо Nikki' (Nichiren Funeral Diary) and continues as a center of Lotus Sutra tradition in Suruga.
