Rokuo-in
About
History
Rokuoin is an independent Rinzai-affiliated Buddhist temple located in Saga-Kitaboriminami-cho, Ukyo-ku, Kyoto, with the mountain name Kakuozan. It was founded in 1373 (Oan 6) with Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the third shogun of the Muromachi shogunate, as its patron, and Shuya Myoha as its founding abbot. The shariden (relic hall) built by Yoshimitsu enshrines a Buddha tooth relic brought from Song-dynasty China. The principal deity is Shaka Nyorai (Shakyamuni Buddha). Located in the tranquil landscape of Sagano, it is renowned for its moss-covered stone-paved approach and autumn foliage. The shoin garden, designated a National Historic Site, is celebrated as a masterpiece of garden design, conveying the history and Zen aesthetic of this place.
