Nagato Kokubunji is a venerable ancient temple established by imperial edict of Emperor Shomu during the Nara period. As one of the temples established throughout each province under the provincial temple system, it played a central role in Nagato Province. Standing quietly in the peaceful Nagafu area of Shimonoseki, this is a strong temple that has overcome countless wars and disasters throughout its long history. As a center of Buddhist culture and a spiritual pillar of the region, it continues to be cherished by many people even today.
