History

Byakko

Shusseinari Shrine in Bunkyo's Hongo was founded in 1630, when a retainer of Kasuga-no-Tsubone witnessed an elderly white-haired man claiming this land would prosper — believed to be the Inari deity in disguise. The shrine takes its name shusseinari (career-advancement Inari) from Kasuga-no-Tsubone herself, who rose from a ronin's wife to ruler of the Great Interior (O-oku). After a fire in 1717, a new divine image carved from a cedar of Kyoto's Inari Mountain was enshrined. Today visitors come to pray for career success and good fortune.
