History
Hashiizu Jinja is an ancient shrine situated at the eastern tip of the Miura Peninsula on the seashore overlooking Tokyo Bay. It is known for the sorrowful yet beautiful love story of Yamato Takeru no Mikoto and his consort Otachibana Hime no Mikoto. According to legend, during Yamato Takeru's eastern campaign, when rough seas prevented the ship from advancing, the princess threw herself into the sea to appease the anger of the sea deity. From the grounds overlooking the sea, one can see all the way to the Boso Peninsula, and since ancient times it has been revered as the guardian deity of maritime safety. As the deities who preserved conjugal love, this shrine also bestows abundant blessings for matchmaking.
