History

Byakko

Sugao Shrine in Okazaki, Aichi, traces its origin to the legendary passage of Yamato Takeru, son of Emperor Keiko, who enshrined the Ise deities at this site and named it Fukiya Daimyojin. In 725 (Jinki 2), Inari Daimyojin was enshrined alongside. In 1566, Tokugawa Ieyasu rebuilt the shrine halls. After several relocations, the shrine was moved to its current site in 1901. The summer Sugao Festival — featuring sacred boats on the Oto River and fireworks offerings — is counted among the Three Great Festivals of Okazaki.
